Mobile Communication (Historical Names: "Introduction to Communication 2" (ITC2) and other names)

Outline and motivation

In the information and communication industry, two outstanding areas of growths are internet technologies as well as mobile networks.

These subjects of mobile networks, other names closely related are "Wireless Internet" or "Pervasive Computing", are subjects of the 4 lectures given by the chair for communication technologies (ComTec).

Depending on the choice of the students an opportunity to improve English will be given.

The curriculum of this lecture here covers the following topics:

  • Mobil radio channel and radio transmission
  • GSM services (speach, data, security functions)
  • GSM system (BSS, MSC), GPRS
  • UMTS
  • Bluetooth
  • W-LAN
  • Innovative Applications like MMS, Location based services
  • Pervasive computing, Ubiquituous Systems

Test and administrative issues

The starting date of the lecture is Wednesday 02.04.2008 at 10:15, where further information about the contents and administrative issues will be provided.

The lecture ("classical" lecture style, given by Prof. Dr. Klaus David) will be accompanied by exercises (given by Mr. Alexander Bolz and Mr. Andreas Pirali). To get the certification (Deutsche: "Schein") a written test (Deutsch: "Klausur"), with identical content given in English and in German, has to be passed (date for this will be organized). In addition a laboratory (Deutsch: "Laborpraktikum") will be offered. The lecture has, depending on your study order, between 3 to 5 SWS.

For students of Computer Science (Deutsch: "Informatik") this lecture is equivalent to "Grundlagen der Kommunikationstechnik".
